Mechanism of nicotine addiction: when nicotine binds to receptors at the cell body, it excites the neuron to fire more action potentials toward the synapse (upper panel). When nicotine binds to nicotine receptors at the nerve terminal, it increases the amount of dopamine released in response to an action potential, labeled diagram.
